Born into royalty over 2,600 years ago, the Shakyamuni Buddha as we known him now, came into the world as Siddhartha Gautama, a young price. Compassionate and intelligent, Siddhartha grew up having anything anyone could ever want. In an attempt to keep him from experiencing unpleasantness, his parents shielded him the realities of life, and he rarely left his royal home. On a rare outing at the age of 29, he met someone sick and suffering, then met an old and frail person, and finally saw a dead person. He realized that all of life included suffering in some form, and such began his quest for enlightenment.
Siddhartha decided to secretly leave his royal home in search of true and the release from suffering. Into the forest he traveled, meeting his spiritual leaders who would teach him forms of meditation and work on the mind. For six years, he learned and practiced. But his teachers could not teach him the liberation he sought, so he sat the base of the Bodhi tree, for six days and nights, in deep meditation, fighting the temptations and the obstacles of the human mind. On the final day, the morning of the May full moon, just before his 35th birthday, Siddhartha reached enlightenment and became the Buddha, the Awakened One.
There is, of course, much more to the story, but today we are reminded of Siddhartha’s commitment to his practice, compassion for all living things, and the unavoidable reality of the suffering of an earthly existence. Many Buddhist and spiritual homes contain a figure of the Buddha as a reminder of this spiritual quest.
ABOUT THESE CARVINGS
I am immensely proud to make accessible to you these hand carved deities and figures, directly from India, through a source that I work closely with personally on each and every piece! Many skilled stone artisans in India work for very little pay or compensation – in harsh conditions – and both the Crystal Lion and our partner in India are working to change that. It’s a joy to share with you that the artisans are fairly treated and paid FAIR WAGES for their beautiful (and hard) work. Not only that, but so much love goes into their art – you can both SEE it and FEEL it! You can purchase our carvings with confidence, knowing your pieces have a high vibration and a fair footprint…and have been minimally handled (by the artist, their packer, and myself) before coming to you for their magical work!
You will receive the exact Unakite Buddha head piece pictured. It has a polished flat bottom and stands upright on its own. It measures 4 inches tall, 3 inches wide, and 2.5 inches thick.
All stones and crystals in our shop have been cleansed with our natural mountain spring water (except for those that may dissolve in water, such as selenite) and have been smudged with organic white sage, harvested sustainably and produced fairly.
Please note that crystals, minerals and fossils are a natural product and are rarely perfect. I do my best to capture each side of each piece in the photos. They are creations of Mother Nature that have weathered the elements and more for untold number of years, and I cannot guarantee perfection or perfect points. These are natural objects. All photographs are taken outside, in natural sunlight, and the photos are NEVER altered.
