Obsidian is a stone of the shadow, a natural glass formed of volcanic origin. It helps us illuminate what we’ve relegated to the depths of ourselves, in order to bring it to the surface for healing. Do you know what your shadow is? The part of you that’s kept hidden from yourself and others? This is what shadow work is – and only once we do it can we fully evolve.
I think of these hearts as our wounds frozen in time – the size that our own hearts were during a moment or series of moments we hardened ourselves. Were you 2? 5? 14? 45? My wish for you is that as these hearts go out to their homes, they help you do the hard work – the work you’re ready to do.
Utilized in the Paleolithic period (starting about 40,000 years ago), brittle and sharp Obsidian was carved into arrowheads, spears, and other tools to assist early humankind. When molten lava cools, it forms glass over time; but Obsidian cooled quickly and remained opaque – creating the most potent natural glass known to earth!
This incredibly ancient healing ally reminds us of our light and dark nature, striving to help us reach a balance in our polarities. Obsidian doesn’t want us to hide from our darker nature: in fact, it shines a light onto it so that we can acknowledge and heal our shadow selves. And encourages us to face our true selves. Obsidian is metaphysically revered for its ability to cut through negativity, repair the aura, and increase our self control – it has also been traditionally used for scrying. It’s a stone found all around the world, and reveals itself to us in a myriad of colors, sheens, and shimmers, but none so deeply powerful as black Obsidian. Incredibly protective and grounding, Obsidian is a must-have in any crystal healer’s collection – a powerful talisman of thousands of years between its first uses and now.
Fun fact for all you GoT fans out there: Obsidian is the stone referred to as “Dragon Glass” in the Game of Thrones universe!
This listing is for the exact handcarved, Anatomically correct, Spiderweb Obsidian heart pictured. It measures 5 inches long and weighs several pounds – this is one of the single largest hearts to come back with us from the Tucson gem show!
All stones and crystals in our shop have been cleansed with our natural mountain spring water (except for those that may dissolve in water, such as selenite) and have been smudged with organic white sage, harvested sustainably and produced fairly.
Please note that crystals, minerals and fossils are a natural product and are rarely perfect. I do my best to capture each side of each piece in the photos. Please remember that all monitors and screens pick up colors differently. My photos are ALWAYS taken in natural sunlight and are NEVER enhanced. Each one is unique and one of a kind. They are creations of Mother Nature that have weathered thousands of years in the earth. 🙂
